Flight PK8303, an Airbus A320 carrying 91 passengers and eight crew - including many families traveling before Sunday's Eid holiday - had traveled from Lahore.

Mr. Zubair, who suffered only minor injuries, said the plane attempted one landing after which crashed 10-15 minutes later.

"No-one was aware that the airplane was about to wreck; they had been flying the airplane in a smooth manner," he explained.

He lost consciousness after the crash. When he came to, he said, "I could hear screams from all possible directions. Kids and adults. I couldn't find any folks - simply hear their shouts".

"I opened my seatbelt and saw some mild - I moved towards the light. I had to jump down about 10ft (3m) for to security," he added.

Why did the aircraft crash?


The plane was only just short of the runway perimeter when it struck houses in the Model Colony residential place. TV footage showed rescue crews combing through debris strewn throughout the roads of the thickly populated zone.

Eyewitness Mohammed Uzair Khan told the BBC he had heard a huge noise and moved outside his house. "Nearly four homes were completely collapsed, there was a lot of smoke and fire," he explained. "They're nearly my neighbors, I can not let you know what a dreadful thing it was."

Purported audio of the dialogue between air traffic control and a pilot has been published by social websites. The pilot has been heard saying that the airplane had"missing engines". An air traffic controller asks whether it's going to execute a"tummy landing", to which the pilot answers"mayday, mayday, mayday".

1 civil aviation official told Reuters the plane may have been unable to lower its undercarriage.

Images posted on social media seemed to show scorch marks under both motors, with no undercarriage visible on approach.

Investigators will attempt to retrieve the so-called black box recorders to help determine the cause. A committee of investigation has already been set up.

PIA said the plane had joined the fleet at 2014 and passed its annual airworthiness review last November.
